American players were two for three in the Third Qualifying Round of the Europa League....
Clint Dempsey played 81 solid minutes for Fulham in their 2-0 away win over RNK Split, which was enough to advance the Cottagers to the final playoff round. Fulham will take on FC Dnipro Dnipropetrovsk next with the winner of the series qualifying for a Europa League group stage spot.
Side Note- This was Dempsey's first game back with Fulham under yet another new manger, Martin Jol.
Jozy Altidore, who is still sidelined with a hamstring injury, watched his new club AZ Alkmaar draw 1-1 yesterday. However, AZ won 3-1 on aggregate and advanced to face Norwegian side Aalesunds FK in the playoff round.
Clarence Goodson got an inspired performance out of Brondby in his first match as captain, but sadly it wasn't enough. Trailing SV Ried 2-0 after the first leg, Brondby needed at least a two goal win to even have a chance. Two first half goals from Brondby meant a Europa League spot was possible. Then, two early second half goals really meant that advancing was in the cards. However, heartbreaking goals from Ried in the 71st minute and then in the 88th minute leveled the aggregate at 4 all. Unfortunately, for Goodson and Brondby they were eliminated on away goals.
